Two years later, the name Elena Devon was gone. I had taken back my maiden name—Elena Vance—and used the

massive civil settlement from the Devon estate to launch the Justice First Foundation. The organization was

dedicated to providing elite legal defense, forensic accounting, and medical protection to victims of domestic abuse

and corporate manipulation who couldn't afford real security.

Our headquarters sat in a beautiful, sunlit building downtown, far removed from the cold, oppressive

architecture of the Devon world. The walls were covered in art, and the atmosphere was filled with hope and

recovery.

My work caught the attention of the governor's office. Following a vacancy on the state supreme court, I was

officially nominated and confirmed as the youngest presiding judge in the district's history. The little girl whose

father worked double shifts in a manufacturing plant was now sitting on the highest bench in the city, holding the

gavel of ultimate authority.

Marcus Miller walked into my office late one afternoon, carrying a folder of our foundation’s successful cases.

He had retired from the police department to take over as our chief of security and private investigations.

"Another three cases closed today, Judge Vance," Marcus smiled, setting the files down on my desk. "The
