Chapter 7

The days at the Thorne Estate bled into one another, creating a tapestry of quiet, domestic bliss that Marcus had never allowed himself to experience before. For a man who had built an empire on ruthless efficiency, constant travel, and sleepless nights, the sound of a baby’s gentle breathing had become his new sanctuary. The boardroom had been replaced by the nursery, and he found that he did not miss the cutthroat world of corporate takeovers at all.
One particular afternoon, while Khloe was resting with Maya upstairs, Marcus sat in his private study on the ground floor. He was flipping through a catalog of playground equipment, trying to decide what to build in the east gardens for when Maya was older. The absolute normalcy of the task made him smile.
Suddenly, the encrypted private line on his desk buzzed. It was a phone he rarely used anymore, a direct line to the inner circle of Thorne Industries.
Marcus stared at the blinking green light. A sense of foreboding washed over him, a cold reminder that the past rarely stayed buried forever. Reluctantly, he picked up the receiver.
"Marcus speaking," he said, his voice dropping into the authoritative tone he had not used in months.
"Marcus, it’s David," the voice on the other end replied. David Vance was his former Chief Operating Officer and one of the few men on the board Marcus still trusted.
"David. I thought I made it clear that I am on an indefinite leave. The board has the reigns."
"I wouldn't be calling if it wasn't an absolute emergency," David sighed, sounding exhausted. "It’s about Julian. Since he stepped in as acting CEO, he’s been digging into the legacy files. The ones concerning your father’s original trusts. He’s trying to rewrite the company bylaws to permanently lock you out, Marcus."
Marcus clenched his jaw. "Julian is a caretaker. He doesn't have the voting power to rewrite the bylaws."
"He does if he convinces the board that your departure was due to mental instability caused by the Rossi scandal," David warned softly. "He is building a case to freeze your remaining assets, claiming you are a liability to the shareholders. He wants the entire empire, Marcus. And he is willing to destroy your reputation to get it."
Marcus looked out the window toward the garden where his wife and daughter had been playing just hours before. The shadows were creeping back in.

"I will look into it, David. Thank you for the warning."
He hung up the phone, the silence of the study suddenly feeling heavy and suffocating.
