Chapter 9
Chapter 9: The Price of Greed
Faced with irrefutable evidence—from videos and audio recordings to the testimonies of a doctor and a locksmith—Renata's defense completely collapsed.
Even the expensive, high-powered lawyer she had hired shook his head in defeat after receiving the "gift package" of documents from Andrés. He strongly advised her to accept a plea deal for leniency, as there was absolutely no loophole in the case to exploit for a defense.
Renata ultimately had to bow her head and plead guilty in court.
The price she paid was devastating.
She lost her marriage to Andrés. The court ruled she must vacate the house empty-handed, stripping her of all rights to their shared assets. The image of the "devoted, self-sacrificing daughter-in-law" she had painstakingly cultivated and performed for months in front of her neighbors evaporated into thin air, replaced by the permanent stigma of a fraudster and a cruel abuser of the elderly.
The neighbors who had previously been gullible enough to believe her lies, especially Doña Lucha, felt immense guilt and shame. They banded together, bringing baskets of freshly baked sweet bread and beautiful bouquets of flowers, knocking on Doña Teresa's door to offer their deepest apologies.
Doña Teresa welcomed them with a warm, gentle smile. She showed no resentment and did not try to humiliate them. She simply accepted the flowers and offered a gentle reminder:

"Everything is in the past now, we are all neighbors here. But I only hope that, in the future, before you choose to believe the whispered gossip on the sidewalk, you take the time to listen to the frantic knocks on the doors from within the house first. There are captive truths that desperately need to be heard."
The old woman's soft but poignant words caused everyone to lower their heads, silently carving the expensive lesson into their hearts.
