Chapter 10
Chapter 10: New Light Behind the Door
A few months after the dark ordeal ended, the house in Zapopan underwent major transformations.
The dark, suffocating bedroom of the past was completely revitalized. Doña Teresa called a contractor to permanently remove that cruel, one-way deadbolt. The door now remained wide open, welcoming the cool, fresh breeze. The gloomy walls were repainted a bright, cheerful light blue, bringing a deep sense of peace.
Next to the window, overlooking the quiet street, she placed a plush, comfortable armchair. On the small side table rested the brand-new smartphone Andrés had bought for her, alongside a framed photograph of her late husband, smiling toward the sunlight.
Andrés, after finalizing the divorce proceedings and ensuring the criminal cases were securely handled, requested a transfer to a military unit much closer to home so he could properly care for his mother. He only returned to active duty once he saw that she had genuinely reclaimed her joy for life.
On a weekend afternoon, the day before Andrés was set to leave for his new assignment, he found his mother busy in the kitchen, energetically baking a lemon meringue pie—his absolute favorite dessert since childhood, filling the house with a delicious, sweet aroma.
He walked over, hugged her shoulders, and teased with a smile:
"How are things, Mother? Do you still feel 'confused' or 'forgetful' every now and then?"
Doña Teresa burst out laughing, her hands never stopping their kneading of the dough.
"I certainly do, my son," she replied, her eyes sparkling with joy.
"Sometimes I completely forget... why I ever allowed myself to be afraid of and submit to such a small, pathetic woman in the first place!"
Mother and son laughed heartily together, the crisp, joyful sound chasing away the very last shadows of their dark past.
Out in the hallway, a new, compact, state-of-the-art security camera was discreetly mounted in the corner of the ceiling, its tiny green indicator light blinking quietly.

But this time, the camera system wasn't there to monitor a prison, nor was it used to conceal crimes.
It was diligently fulfilling its true purpose: watching over and protecting the peace, warmth, and safety of the people in this house who genuinely loved one another.
