Chapter 23 - The Aftermath

The weeks following the explosive trial brought a profound, sweeping sense of peace. With Victoria and Marcus officially sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison, Julian moved aggressively to clean house at Sterling Vanguard. The board members who had enabled Marcus were quietly but forcefully forced into early retirement. Julian stepped back into his role as CEO with a renewed, unshakeable authority, completely unburdened by the treacherous elements that had tried to destroy him.
Maya’s life had also radically transformed. The intense media scrutiny eventually died down, moving on to the next major scandal. She visited her father at the Hamptons estate every weekend. Thomas was making miraculous strides in his physical therapy, walking around the beautiful gardens without the absolute need for his oxygen tank.
One crisp Tuesday morning, Maya stood in the massive guest bedroom of Julian’s penthouse, slowly folding her clothes and placing them into a suitcase.
She felt a heavy, lingering sadness settling over her heart. The trial was finished. The threats were completely neutralized. Her job as a protected witness was officially done. She had no legitimate reason to stay in the billionaire's penthouse anymore. Julian had been incredibly busy rebuilding his empire, working long hours, and Maya convinced herself that their brief, intense romance was simply a trauma bond—a product of the extreme danger they had faced together.

She zipped up her suitcase, taking one last look at the stunning view of the city. She drafted a quick, heartfelt note thanking him for everything, planning to leave it on the kitchen counter. She didn't want a tearful goodbye. It would be entirely too painful to walk away if he looked at her with those piercing blue eyes.
Maya grabbed the handle of her suitcase and walked out into the living room, ready to leave her fairytale behind.
