Chapter 14 - Marcus's Confession

The heavy steel door of the interrogation room slammed shut, making Marcus jump violently in his plastic chair. He looked absolutely terrible. He hadn't slept in three days, his hair was greasy, and his hands shook constantly. The reality of a life sentence in a federal penitentiary was slowly crushing his spirit.

Detective Rossi walked into the room, tossing a thick legal folder onto the table with a loud smack.

"Your sister is throwing you entirely to the wolves, Marcus," Rossi said bluntly, pulling up a chair. "She signed a formal statement two hours ago. She claims you drugged her, stole her credit cards to buy the poison, and forced her to go along with the plot under the threat of physical violence."

"She is lying!" Marcus screamed, slamming his handcuffed fists against the table. "Victoria is a sociopath! She planned the whole thing! She hated Julian because he was forcing her to sign a prenuptial agreement that left her with nothing if she cheated! She wanted the empire!"

"Prove it," Rossi challenged, leaning forward. "Give me something concrete, Marcus, or you are going down as the sole mastermind of this assassination attempt."

Marcus hyperventilated, sweat pouring down his pale face. He was a coward at heart, and the prospect of taking the fall for his sister broke whatever remained of his loyalty.

"The offshore accounts," Marcus stammered frantically. "The money we stole from Sterling Vanguard. It isn't hidden in Switzerland like she told you. It’s in a heavily encrypted crypto-wallet. I have the seed phrase memorized. I can give you absolute access to eighty million dollars in stolen funds, proving she paid the assassins."

Rossi’s eyebrows raised slightly. This was the golden ticket they needed.

"Write it down," Rossi demanded, sliding a legal pad and a pen across the metal table. "If this money traces back to her chemical purchases, I will tell the District Attorney you fully cooperated. But make no mistake, Marcus, you are still going to prison for a very, very long time."

Marcus grabbed the pen, weeping openly as he wrote down his own doom.
