Chapter 27: Piercing the Corporate Veil

The investigation into Aegis Holdings led me to a prestigious law firm located on the top floors of a glass tower overlooking the financial district. The firm, Sterling & Vance, had a familiar name in its partnership list. I realized with a jolt of anger that the retired harbor captain’s brother, Arthur Vance, was a senior partner specializing in international asset management.

The connection was clear now. The harbor corruption wasn't just a local economic agreement; it was a pipeline that fed directly into the financial machinery of the city’s elite. The retired captain hadn't sent the hitmen, but his brother had access to the records and the motivation to eliminate anyone who could expose the connection.

I obtained a federal search warrant for Arthur Vance's office, backed by the evidence of the shipping manifests and the transaction records I had extracted from the harbor database.

When the task force raided the office, we didn't find a cartel boss with drugs and weapons. We found a elegant man in a bespoke suit, calmly sipping espresso while federal agents boxed up his hard drives and financial ledgers.

"You're making a significant mistake, detective," Arthur Vance said, his voice smooth and devoid of any panic. "Our firm represents hundreds of international clients. What you're doing today is an illegal disruption of legitimate commerce."

"Legitimate commerce doesn't send armed men to a residential home to execute a woman and her child, Mr. Vance," I said, standing before his desk. "Your brother gave up the shipping manifests. The federal government has your signatures on the transfer authorizations for Aegis Holdings. The game is over."

He looked at me, a slow, malicious smile spreading across his face. "You think you've won because you have some papers? The money you're looking for belongs to people who don't exist on paper, detective. Even if you lock me up, they will still want their assets. And they will still look at you as the person holding the key."

His words weren't a boast; they were a warning. The syndicate wasn't a single snake with multiple heads; it was a hydra, and we had only managed to capture one of its clerks.
