Chapter 21: Cold Trails and Warm Hearth

The winter arrived with a sudden, freezing fury, coating the harbor in a layer of jagged ice and turning the daily patrols into treacherous exercises in navigation. The cold kept people indoors, reducing the crime rate to virtually zero, but it intensified the isolation within the department.

I focused my efforts on securing our home. I installed a modern security system, reinforced the door frames, and ensured that Mara had a direct line to the state police dispatch, bypassing the local precinct entirely. If things went sideways, I couldn't rely on my own department to answer the call.

Despite the underlying tension, there were moments of pure, unadulterated joy. On the first morning of heavy snowfall, Leo saw the white blanket covering the yard and let out a sound of pure amazement. We bundled him up in so many layers he could barely bend his arms, and we spent two hours building a lopsided snowman in the front yard.

Watching Mara laugh as she threw a handful of snow at me, her cheeks flushed with the cold, I felt a profound sense of justification. This was what I was fighting for. This simple, domestic ordinary life was the prize that the syndicate had tried to steal from us.

"Look at him," Mara whispered later, as we dried our boots by the wood stove. Leo was fast asleep on the rug, exhausted from his snowy adventure. "He doesn't have a single fear in his heart. That’s because of you."

"It's because of both of us," I said.

That night, while the wind howled against the windowpanes, I received an anonymous text message on my personal phone. It was an image of the security system I had installed that morning, taken from the woods outside our house. Attached was a short message: Good security. But cameras don't stop the cold.

The threat was explicit. They were watching the house. The boundary between my professional crusade and my family’s safety had been breached again. I sat by the dying fire, my service weapon resting on the coffee table, realizing that the quiet strategy was no longer an option. I had to strike first before they took the only thing that mattered to me.
