Chapter 20: The Weight of Whispers

The atmosphere at the precinct changed subtly over the next week. The casual greetings became shorter, and conversations in the breakroom died down whenever I entered. Vance had clearly made a few phone calls. The thin blue wall was forming again, even in this small town, isolating me from the people who were supposed to have my back.

During a routine traffic stop on the coastal highway, I called for backup when the driver turned out to be an aggressive, intoxicated individual with an outstanding warrant. Under normal circumstances, the nearest unit would arrive within three minutes. Ten minutes passed, and I was left to subduing the suspect alone on the gravel shoulder while he kicked at my shins and screamed threats.

When Officer Davis finally arrived, his expression was apologetic but strained. "Sorry, detective. We had a false alarm down at the marina. Traffic was backed up."

"The marina is three miles in the opposite direction, Davis," I said, slamming the suspect’s head gently onto the hood of the cruiser to secure the cuffs. "And there is no traffic on a Thursday afternoon."

Davis wouldn't meet my eyes. He helped me lift the suspect into the back seat, his movements hurried. "Just be careful who you're digging into," he whispered quickly as we closed the door. "People around here have long memories, and they care more about their families' mortgages than they do about city politics."

That evening, I sat on the porch of our house, watching Leo sleep through the screen door. Mara came out, wrapping a knit blanket around my shoulders. She could read the tension in my posture like a familiar book.

"It’s happening again, isn't it?" she asked softly.

"What do you mean?"

"The look on your face. You have that look you had right before the grand jury indictments. The world is closing in, and you're trying to hold the walls up by yourself." She sat next to me, her voice trembling slightly. "We came here to escape this, Maya. If there’s trouble here, let’s just leave. We can find another town, another state."

"If we run every time we find a spider, we’ll spend our whole lives running, Mara," I said, turning to look at her. "I'm not looking for a fight. But I won't let them make this place unsafe for us. We earned this house. We earned this peace."

She looked out at the dark water, her expression torn between trust and terror. "Just promise me you won't let them take you away from us. Evan didn't kill us, but if this work consumes you, it’s the same result."
