Chapter 6 - The Ghost's Face|

Adrien stared at the photograph. The world around him faded into complete static. The murmuring guests, the classical music, the glittering chandeliers—everything vanished.
"Where did you get this?" Adrien whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion Rosa had never heard from him before.
Rosa looked at the photograph in his hand and swallowed hard. "That's... that's my mother, sir."
Adrien’s head snapped up. He looked at Rosa, really looked at her, stripping away the grey housekeeper's uniform, stripping away the tied-back hair.
The shape of her jaw. The line of her nose.
And then he looked down at Mia, who was peeking out from behind Rosa's shoulder.
Mia blinked her dark eyes, looking up at the billionaire. Right above her left eyebrow was a tiny, distinct, heart-shaped birthmark.
Adrien felt as if someone had kicked him in the chest.
"Your mother?" Adrien gasped, his eyes wild. "Rosa... what was your mother's name?"
"Her name was Clara," Rosa said softly, trembling under his intense stare. "Clara Delgado. But... before she moved to New Mexico, she said her name was Clara Hastings."
A collective gasp rippled through the few guests who were close enough to hear.
Adrien’s hand shook so badly the photograph nearly fell again.
"Clara..." Adrien breathed, tears springing to his eyes for the first time in over a decade. "She... she didn't die in the river?"
"No, sir," Rosa whispered, tears filling her eyes too. "She lived in a small town outside Santa Fe. She worked at a bakery. She raised me alone. But she died of illness four years ago."
Adrien closed his eyes, a dry, choked sob escaping his throat. Twelve years of grief, twelve years of guilt, exploding all at once in the middle of a crowded ballroom.

He opened his eyes and looked at Rosa—not as his housekeeper, but as his sister's daughter. His niece.
And then he looked at little Mia. His grandniece.
