Chapter 3 - The Silence Breaks|

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke.

The cold steel of the blades touched the edge of Mia's dark curls. A single tear slipped down the toddler's cheek, silent and terrifying.

"What is happening here?"

The voice didn't come from the kitchen. It came from the grand corridor leading to the executive study.

Adrien Hastings stood in the archway.

He wore a dark, tailored tuxedo, his shirt collar slightly unbuttoned from a long evening of negotiations. He was thirty-four, tall, carrying the formidable presence of a man who managed billions without ever having to raise his voice.

He looked at the crowd. He looked at Rosa, who was on her knees on the marble floor, weeping silently. He looked at Mia, trembling on a stool.

Then his eyes landed on his fiancée.

Vanessa held the silver shears inches from a three-year-old’s face.

The silence in the room stretched so tight it felt ready to snap.

"Adrien," Vanessa said quickly, her face smoothing into an easy, dismissive smile as she lowered the scissors slightly. "Darling, I was just handling a minor issue. The staff left a child unattended in the main hall. It’s completely unprofessional."

Adrien didn't look at the party guests. He didn't look at the caterers. He walked forward, his stride slow, heavy, and dangerous.

"Put the shears down, Vanessa," Adrien said.

His tone wasn't loud. It was terrifyingly calm.

"Adrien, look at her hair," Vanessa insisted, her voice pitching slightly higher. "It's wild. It looks hideous against the decor. I was just trimming—"

"I said," Adrien repeated, stopping two inches from her, "put them down."

Vanessa’s fingers twitched. For a second, defiance flashed in her blue eyes. But the sheer coldness radiating from Adrien made her fingers loosen.

The heavy silver shears fell to the marble floor with a sharp, echoing CLANG.
