Chapter 16 - The Return to Court|

Two weeks later, the courtroom looked exactly the same, but I was entirely different.
I didn’t grip the wooden railing for support. I stood tall, wearing a sharp navy suit, my medical records replaced by a thick stack of federal indictments.
Judge Richard Hanley looked over his glasses, his usual stern expression replaced by genuine shock.
“Mrs. Whitaker,” Judge Hanley said, clearing his throat. “I must admit, the developments in this case are… unprecedented.”
My new attorney—provided by a domestic abuse advocacy group—stood beside me. “Your Honor, we are petitioning for sole legal and physical custody of Lily Whitaker, immediate revocation of all of Daniel Whitaker’s parental rights, and a permanent restraining order.”
“Granted,” Judge Hanley said without a second of hesitation. He slammed his gavel down. “Furthermore, this court issues a bench warrant for Daniel Whitaker on charges of attempted murder, fraud, and flight to avoid prosecution.”
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for seven years. It was over. The law was finally on my side.
As we left the courthouse, the press was waiting. The story of the wealthy architect who tried to poison his wife and faked his death had made national news. Cameras flashed, and reporters shouted questions.
Carter was waiting by my car, dressed in civilian clothes. He expertly guided me through the throng of reporters, shielding me from the cameras.
“How does it feel?” Carter asked as we drove away from the courthouse.
“Like I can finally breathe,” I smiled, looking at the city skyline. “Patricia’s bail was denied this morning. She’s looking at twenty years.”
“Good,” Carter smiled back. “And what about you and Lily? What’s next?”
“We’re moving,” I said. “Somewhere quiet. Somewhere he can never find us.”
May you like
Carter nodded. “I know a place in Montana. A small town. Good schools. I… I might be transferring to a base near there next month.”
I looked at him, a genuine smile spreading across my face. “I think Lily would like Montana.”
