Chapter 10 - The School Run|

“We have to stop him from getting Lily!” I panicked, grabbing my coat.
“You stay here,” Carter commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. “My team is already positioned at the elementary school. Daniel won’t get within fifty feet of your daughter.”
He pointed to the screen. Daniel was zipping up the duffel bag, looking around frantically. He grabbed his keys and bolted out the front door.
I paced the safe house room for the next twenty minutes, chewing my fingernails down to the quick. Every worst-case scenario flashed through my mind. Daniel had always been manipulative, but knowing he was a murderer made him entirely unpredictable.
My burner phone rang. It was Carter.
“We secured Lily,” Carter said over the noise of an engine. “She’s safe with a female officer, eating ice cream in the back of an unmarked cruiser. But Daniel never showed up at the school.”
My stomach dropped. “What? Then where is he?”
“We lost his SUV in traffic near the financial district. He abandoned the vehicle.”
I closed my eyes, trying to think like him. If he knew I was gone, and he knew the police might be onto him, where would he go? He wouldn’t leave without money.
“The bank,” I said suddenly. “Carter, he drained our joint accounts, but Patricia has a private vault at First Continental Bank downtown. He’s going there to get cash and passports.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive. He bragged about it once when he was drunk. He said Patricia kept an emergency bug-out fund.”
“Copy that. I’m redirecting units to First Continental.”
Before Carter could hang up, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold. A slow, heavy crunch of tires on gravel right outside the window of the safe house.
I peeked through the blinds.

It was a black Mercedes. Patricia Whitaker’s car.
“Carter,” I whispered into the phone. “Patricia is here.”
