Chapter 2 - The Command Refused

|

Elena had been sixteen when her mother placed the cool metal against her collarbone.

Her mother, Maria, had been so weak from the cancer that she could barely lift her hands from the hospital bed.

"Never sell this, Elena," her mother had whispered, her breathing ragged. "Even if you have absolutely nothing else. Keep it."

Elena had never understood why the simple silver necklace was so important. It wasn't worth more than twenty dollars at a pawn shop. She only knew it was the absolute last thing she had left of the woman who raised her.

Now, in the center of the glittering ballroom, Cassandra reached for it again.

Elena instinctively stepped away, holding the locket tightly against her chest.

"Please don’t touch it," Elena warned, her voice trembling but surprisingly firm.

Cassandra stared at her, genuinely stunned by the resistance. Something incredibly ugly appeared behind her beautiful, sculpted expression.

"Are you giving me an order?" Cassandra asked softly.

"No, ma'am."

"Then hand it over."

Elena shook her head slowly. "I’m sorry. I can't."

Several guests standing nearby went completely still. Nobody told Cassandra Vance no. Especially not a maid making minimum wage.

Cassandra stepped aggressively closer, invading Elena's personal space.

"You should be sorry," Cassandra sneered. Her gaze traveled deliberately, cruelly down Elena’s body. "Frankly, I don’t even understand why housekeeping hired someone who can barely fit into the uniform."

A few nervous, sycophantic laughs came from somewhere near the open bar.

Elena lowered her eyes, staring at the polished marble floor. She had heard comments like that her entire life. She was a curvy woman in a world that demanded sharp edges. Too big. Too slow. Too noticeable.

At twenty-nine, she had learned the hard way that sometimes surviving meant pretending cruel words did not hurt. This catering job paid exactly enough to cover the rent on the small, drafty apartment she shared with her younger brother, Leo.

She could not afford pride.

So she remained silent, hoping the awful woman would just walk away.

Cassandra leaned closer, refusing to let her go.

"Look at me when I’m speaking to you," Cassandra commanded.

Elena slowly raised her dark eyes.

Cassandra smiled a victorious, wicked smile. "There. Much better." Then she held out her open, perfectly manicured hand. "The necklace. Now."

"No."

The word escaped before Elena could bite her tongue.

The immediate area of the room fell absolutely silent. The string quartet seemed unbearably loud.

Cassandra’s face changed from smugness to pure, unadulterated shock. "What?"

Elena’s hands trembled around the broken chain, her knuckles turning white. But she refused to back down. She repeated herself, clearer this time.

"No, ma’am."

Cassandra suddenly seized the front of Elena’s gray uniform, her nails digging into the fabric.

Several wealthy guests gasped at the sudden physical escalation.

"You ungrateful little bitch—" Cassandra started to yell.

"Cassandra."

One word. Quiet. Controlled.

But it cut through the massive ballroom more effectively than a gunshot.
