Chapter 14 - The New Heir

The revelation shifted the entire balance of power in Chicago. The decades-old blood feud between the Moretti and Falcone syndicates didn't end overnight, but a fragile, unprecedented peace treaty was forged, anchored entirely by the existence of Elena and Leo.
A month later, Elena stood on the balcony of her new penthouse suite in the Moretti estate, looking out over the city skyline. She was no longer wearing a gray uniform. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that hugged her curves flawlessly.
She held a glass of expensive wine, enjoying the quiet evening breeze.
"You look like you belong here," a deep voice said from behind her.
Elena turned and smiled as Adrian stepped onto the balcony, holding a file folder. The cold, terrifying mafia boss had softened considerably over the past month, stepping effortlessly into the role of a protective, fiercely loyal uncle.
"I'm still getting used to people calling me 'Miss Moretti' without handing me a mop," Elena joked, taking a sip of wine.
Adrian chuckled softly, coming to stand beside her at the railing. "They will never hand you a mop again. In fact, they’ll be asking you for permission to speak soon."
He handed her the file folder.
"What is this?" Elena asked, opening it.
"Those are the finalized transfer documents for the Vance family assets," Adrian explained. "You officially own three hotels, four commercial high-rises, and a massive offshore investment portfolio. You are currently one of the wealthiest women in Illinois."
Elena stared at the numbers on the paper. It was an incomprehensible amount of money. "And Leo?"
"Leo is currently at the warehouse with Marco, learning how to handle a firearm safely," Adrian sighed, rubbing his temples. "Dominic insists his grandson needs to know how to defend himself. I told him the boy should go to college first, but you try arguing with that stubborn old mule."
Elena laughed, a genuine, happy sound that had been missing from her life for too long. "They’re good for each other. Dominic needed a family."
"We all did," Adrian murmured, looking down at his niece with profound affection.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He held it out to her.
"What is this?" Elena asked, confused.
"Open it."
Elena slowly opened the box. Inside, resting on black velvet, was her mother's silver locket. But it had been beautifully restored. The broken chain was replaced with a thick, elegant platinum band. The tarnish was gone, polished until it gleamed like a mirror.
"I had my jeweler fix the chain Cassandra broke," Adrian said softly.
Elena felt tears prick her eyes. She took the necklace out and handed it to Adrian. "Will you put it on me?"
Adrian stepped behind her, gently fastening the cool metal clasp around her neck. The locket rested perfectly against her collarbone, right where her mother had placed it all those years ago.

"Never take it off," Adrian whispered fiercely, kissing the top of her head. "It’s your crown."
Elena touched the silver metal, looking out over the city that was now hers. She had started the month on her knees scrubbing floors. She was ending it as a queen.
