Chapter 16 - The Morning After|

The morning sun broke over the Arizona desert, casting long, golden shadows across the Reyes estate. The heavy tactical vehicles were gone, the lockdown was lifted, and an eerie, peaceful quiet had settled over the property.
Damon sat on the rear patio, a cup of black coffee cooling in his hand. He hadn't slept. He had spent the night coordinating with his capos, solidifying his territory, and sending a brutal, unmistakable message to the Sinaloa cartel that any further incursions would be met with absolute annihilation.
The sliding glass door opened.
Selena stepped out onto the patio. She was wearing a soft, oversized sweater, her dark hair pulled back into a messy bun. The bruising on her jaw had darkened, but she looked relaxed. Safe.
“Ruby is finally asleep,” Selena said softly, walking over to him. “She crashed hard.”
“She earned it,” Damon replied, pulling out the chair next to him.
Selena sat down, wrapping her hands around a mug of tea. They sat in silence for a few minutes, watching the koi swim lazily in the pond—the same pond where Ruby had first decided Damon was her friend.
“I can't stay here, Damon,” Selena said quietly, breaking the silence.
Damon’s head snapped toward her, his chest tightening. “What are you talking about? The threat is neutralized. Victor is gone. You’re completely safe.”
“I know I’m safe,” Selena said, looking down at her tea. “But I can't be your housekeeper anymore. I can't pretend that yesterday didn't happen. I can't pretend that I don't feel... what I feel for you.”
Damon let out a slow breath. He reached across the table, taking her hand in his.
“I don't want you to be my housekeeper, Selena. I never want you to wear that uniform again.”
Selena looked up, her dark eyes searching his face. “Damon, you are the head of a cartel. I am a widow with a toddler and a mountain of debt. In what world does this work?”
“In my world,” Damon said fiercely, standing up and pulling her to her feet. He stepped close, wrapping his arms around her waist. “I make the rules here, Selena. And the only rule that matters right now is that you and Ruby are mine. I am going to protect you, provide for you, and love you, for the rest of my life.”
Selena’s breath hitched. She looked into his dark, unwavering eyes, seeing the absolute truth in his words.
She leaned up and kissed him. It was slow, tentative at first, but Damon responded with a fierce, possessive hunger, pulling her flush against his body.
They were interrupted by the sound of a throat clearing.

They broke apart to see Marcus standing awkwardly in the doorway.
“Sorry to interrupt, Boss,” Marcus said, hiding a smirk. “But we have a situation in the boardroom.”
