Chapter 11 - The Sinaloa Cartel|

Damon guided Selena down the metal grated stairs, keeping his body positioned between her and the open doors of the processing facility.

The shadow team had already taken defensive positions behind the heavy rusted machinery and concrete pillars on the main floor. The silence in the cavernous building was deafening, the kind of heavy quiet that always precedes extreme violence.

“Ghost, sitrep,” Damon whispered.

“They’re advancing on foot,” Ghost replied from his position near the shattered front entrance. “Spreading out. They think Victor’s men are still holding the perimeter.”

“Let them walk into the kill zone,” Damon ordered. “Nobody fires until I give the command.”

Damon pulled Selena behind a massive, solid steel ore crusher. It was the safest spot in the room, thick enough to stop armor-piercing rounds.

He knelt beside her, pressing a spare handgun into her trembling fingers.

“I don't know how to use this,” Selena whispered, her eyes wide with panic as she stared at the heavy black weapon.

“You point it at anything that comes around this corner that isn't me, and you pull the trigger until it stops clicking,” Damon said, his voice calm, projecting a certainty he hoped she would absorb. “But you won't have to. I am not letting them get within fifty feet of you.”

Selena gripped the gun with both hands, nodding slowly.

Footsteps crunched on the gravel outside.

A voice echoed through the broken doorway, thick with a heavy cartel accent.

“Cruz! Victor! We’re here for the package. Bring the woman out!”

Silence.

“Cruz!” the voice yelled again, this time with a sharp edge of suspicion.

Damon raised his rifle, resting the barrel on the edge of the steel crusher, aligning his sights with the doorway. He saw the shadows of the Sinaloa gunmen moving cautiously into the blinding sunlight just outside the entrance.

“They’re spooked,” Ghost whispered over the comms. “They’re stacking up.”

“Take them,” Damon commanded.

The ambush was instantaneous and devastating.

Ghost and the shadow team unleashed a coordinated volley of suppressed automatic fire. The first four Sinaloa gunmen were cut down before they even realized they had walked into a trap.

The remaining cartel members shrieked in panic, diving for cover behind their trucks and returning fire. The deafening roar of unsuppressed AK-47s shattered the quiet desert afternoon, bullets pinging wildly off the metal walls of the facility.

The war had begun.
