Chapter 13 - The Drive Home|

The drive back to the estate was vastly different from the frantic journey out.
The adrenaline had faded, leaving a heavy, exhausted silence in the armored SUV. The shadow team had melted back into the desert in their unmarked trucks, leaving Damon to drive Selena home alone.
Selena sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the setting sun, which painted the Arizona sky in bruised shades of purple and red. She was still gripping the spare handgun Damon had given her, her knuckles white.
Damon reached across the center console and gently placed his hand over hers.
“You can let it go now,” he said quietly.
Selena looked down at the gun, then up at Damon. Her hands were shaking. Damon carefully pried her fingers open, took the weapon, and secured it in the console.
Without a word, Selena unbuckled her seatbelt, slid across the wide leather seat, and leaned her head heavily against Damon’s shoulder.
Damon stiffened for a fraction of a second, entirely unused to this kind of vulnerability. But then he relaxed, wrapping his right arm around her shoulders, keeping his left hand on the steering wheel.
“I thought I was never going to see her again,” Selena whispered, a fresh wave of quiet tears soaking into his shirt. “When Victor grabbed me... he told me I was nothing. Just collateral damage.”
Damon’s grip on her shoulder tightened.
“Victor is a dead man,” Damon said, his voice hard. “He just doesn't know it yet.”
Selena tilted her head up to look at him. “Why did you come for me, Damon? You could have sent your men. You risked your own life. For a maid.”
Damon looked at her, truly looked at her. He saw the fierce resilience that had kept her sane while tied to a chair. He saw the deep, undeniable beauty that had been quietly breaking down his walls for eight months.
“You’re not just a maid, Selena,” Damon said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “I think you’ve known that for a while.”
Selena’s breath hitched. She didn't look away. The tension between them, previously hidden beneath professionalism and class lines, suddenly roared to the surface.

“What are we doing, Damon?” she whispered.
“We’re going home,” he replied, pulling her closer. “And then, I am going to make sure nobody ever looks at you with disrespect again.”
