Chapter 8 - Beneath the Surface

|

As Nevaeh dug deeper into her role as executive assistant, she began to see the true machinery of the Perry empire.

Leandro wasn't just a brutal enforcer like his father had been. He was a brilliant strategist. He was actively transitioning the family’s wealth from illegal rackets into legitimate, high-yield commercial real estate and shipping logistics. He was trying to wash the blood off his family’s name.

Late one night, Nevaeh was organizing a stack of encrypted ledgers in the study. Leandro had fallen asleep on the leather sofa, a rare moment of vulnerability for the mafia boss.

Nevaeh noticed a discrepancy in the shipping manifests. Five massive cargo containers at the docks were listed under a dummy corporation she didn't recognize. The signature authorizing the transfer belonged to Dante Falcone—a lieutenant in a rival syndicate.

Someone was smuggling illicit cargo through Leandro’s clean ports.

Nevaeh printed the manifests and placed them directly on Leandro’s desk, highlighting the forged authorization codes.

When Leandro woke up the next morning, he found the file.

He called her into the study immediately. The relaxed, sleepy man from the sofa was gone. The apex predator was sitting behind the desk.

“Where did you find this?” Leandro demanded, his voice dangerously low.

“It was buried in the quarterly logistics reports,” Nevaeh explained, standing tall. “Someone is routing Falcone contraband through your East Side port, hoping you wouldn't notice during the transition.”

Leandro stared at her, genuinely stunned. He employed teams of highly paid forensic accountants, and none of them had caught the anomaly. A former waitress had found a breach that could have ignited a massive gang war.

“You saved my operations,” Leandro stated, his voice thick with a new, profound level of respect.

“It’s my job to manage your messes, Leandro,” Nevaeh said, using his first name smoothly.

Leandro stood up. He walked slowly around the desk, stopping just inches from her. He looked down into her dark eyes, the physical proximity sending a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

“You are far more dangerous than you pretend to be, Nevaeh,” he whispered.
