Chapter 19 - The New Threat

Leandro picked up the note. His eyes scanned the brief message, the muscles in his jaw ticking furiously.

“What does it say?” Nevaeh pressed, stepping closer to his side, her fear entirely replaced by a fierce, protective readiness.

Leandro looked down at the woman he loved. The woman he had burned his own sister’s life down for.

He handed her the note.

Nevaeh read the elegant script aloud.

“The Midwest does not belong to you, Leandro. The game isn't over. See you soon.”

Nevaeh looked up at the man who had pulled her from the dark. She didn't tremble. She didn't panic. She reached out and took his hand, lacing her fingers tightly through his.

“They want a war,” Nevaeh stated plainly.

“The Morettis are not the Falcones,” Leandro warned, his voice heavy with the reality of the threat. “They are older, richer, and far more violent. If they come for Chicago, they will bring an army.”

“Let them come,” Nevaeh said fiercely. “This is our city. You built this empire, and I’m not going to let some New York aristocrats take it away from us.”

Leandro smiled, a dark, terrifying promise of violence and devotion lighting up his features. The first war was over, but the reign of the Perry Syndicate was about to face its greatest test.

“Marco,” Leandro ordered, his voice echoing in the penthouse. “Call the capos. Put the entire city on high alert. No one sleeps tonight.”

“Yes, Boss,” Marco nodded, turning back to the elevator.

Leandro pulled Nevaeh into his arms, kissing her fiercely. “Are you sure you’re ready for this, mia regina? It’s going to get bloody.”

“I spent eight years cleaning up other people's messes, Leandro,” Nevaeh whispered against his lips. “I think it’s time I made a few of my own.”
