Chapter 16 - The New York Arrival|

Before I could show the document to Luca, the loud sound of heavy car doors slamming echoed from the front driveway.

I ran to the window overlooking the grand foyer entrance.

Four sleek black sedans with New York license plates were parked in a neat line across the driveway. Eight men in dark suits stepped out, opening the rear door for an elderly man with silver hair, carrying a silver-topped cane.

Antonio Vance had arrived in Chicago.

I tucked the old ledger tightly under my arm and ran down the grand staircase just as Marco met the men at the front doors.

"Mr. Moretti is in a meeting downtown," Marco said sternly, blocking the entrance with two armed guards.

"He'll come back when he hears I'm here," Antonio Vance said, his voice smooth and raspy like dry leaves. He stepped into the foyer without waiting for an invitation, his sharp eyes scanning the high marble ceilings.

Then his eyes landed on me, standing at the top of the stairs holding the ledger.

"Ah," Vance smiled faintly, raising his cane slightly. "You must be the little maid who caused all this trouble."

"I am the household manager," I replied coldly, keeping my posture straight and firm.

"You're a servant who destroyed a twenty-year alliance," Vance corrected smoothly. "And because of your little moral crusade, this mansion now belongs to me."
