Chapter 14 - A Growing Connection|

The weeks melted into months.

My father’s health improved dramatically thanks to the specialists Luca had hired for his rehabilitation. He was walking again without a cane, his speech almost entirely restored.

Luca visited my father's small apartment in Bridgeport twice a month, sitting on the porch drinking coffee and listening to my father's old stories about working in the steel mills. The terrifying mob boss who ruled Chicago’s docks sat quietly like an eager student, listening with genuine respect.

One late evening, after a long day of meetings, I found Luca sitting alone in the dark glass conservatory at the back of the mansion, staring out at the falling snow.

I walked in quietly, carrying a tray with two mugs of warm tea.

"You're working late again," I said softly, setting a mug down on the glass table beside him.

Luca looked up, his dark eyes reflecting the soft glow of the garden lights outside. "Just thinking."

"About what?"

"About how close I came to ruining my life," Luca admitted, pulling out a chair for me. "If you hadn't brought Rosa into that ballroom... I would be married to Vanessa right now. Living a lie."

I sat down beside him, feeling the cool chill of the glass windows against the warmth of the tea.

"You would have figured it out eventually," I said. "You're too smart not to see who she really was."

"Maybe," Luca murmured, reaching out to softly touch my hand. "But I wouldn't have found you."

The quiet space between us filled with a delicate, electric tension. Luca leaned in slowly, his eyes locked on mine. He kissed me softly, a gentle, tender kiss that made my heart leap into my throat.

When he pulled back, he smiled warmly. "Stay with me tonight, Emma. Just to talk."

"I'd like that," I whispered.
