Chapter 10 - The Midnight Drive|

The rain poured heavy over the dark streets of Chicago as Marco drove the armored black SUV through the quiet suburbs toward Oak Park.

Rosa sat in the backseat beside me, wrapped in a warm wool blanket Luca had given her before we left. She held her old purse on her lap, staring out the tinted window at the passing streetlights.

"Are you scared, dear?" Rosa asked softly, noticing how tightly I was gripping the leather seat.

"A little," I admitted. "I've never been involved in... whatever this is."

"Luca won't let anything happen to us," Rosa said confidently. "He looks like his father, but he has his mother's mind. He doesn't act out of anger. He acts out of purpose."

Up front, Marco kept his eyes glued to the rearview mirror.

"We've got a tail," Marco said suddenly, his voice calm but dead serious. "Black sedan, no headlights. They've been three cars back since we crossed the bridge."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "Is it Bellini's men?"

"Most likely," Marco replied, flicking a switch on the dashboard. "Hang on back there."

The SUV surged forward as Marco hit the accelerator, the powerful engine roaring against the rain. Behind us, the black sedan suddenly flipped on its high beams, blinding us through the rear window as it sped up to close the distance.

"Marco!" I gasped, pulling Rosa down toward the floorboards.

"Stay down!" Marco ordered, reaching under his jacket with one hand while keeping his left hand firm on the steering wheel.

The black sedan pulled up alongside us on the empty boulevard. The passenger window rolled down, revealing a masked man holding a heavy iron tire iron, aiming directly at our front tire.

They weren't trying to shoot us. They were trying to crash the vehicle.
