Chapter 16 - The Deal with the Devil

|

The preparation for the gala was a whirlwind of terrifying glamour. Dante brought in a team of private stylists who transformed me from a waitress into a mafia queen. I wore a breathtaking, floor-length crimson gown that clung to my curves, dripping with diamonds from the Rosselli family vault.

When I stepped out of the dressing room, Dante was waiting in the foyer, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo. The breath visibly caught in his throat.

"You look exactly like a queen," he murmured, offering me his arm.

"I feel like a target wrapped in silk," I admitted, my hands shaking slightly.

Dante stopped, turning to face me. He reached up, gently adjusting the diamond necklace resting against my collarbone. "You are impenetrable tonight, Alina. My best men surround the hotel. I will not leave your side for a single second."

We arrived at the Grand Continental Hotel in a convoy of armored SUVs. The flashbulbs of the underground press blinded me as we walked up the red carpet. Dante kept me tucked securely against his side, his presence a heavy, comforting shield against the prying eyes of the city’s elite.

The ballroom was a masterpiece of gold and crystal, filled with politicians, judges, and the heads of the remaining crime families. The moment Dante walked in with an unknown woman on his arm, the room fell into a hushed, suffocating silence.

Whispers broke out like wildfire. I kept my chin high, channeling every ounce of fake confidence I could muster.

"Smile, Alina," Dante whispered in my ear, his hand resting possessively on the small of my back. "Let them wonder."

We navigated the room, Dante introducing me simply as "Alina," offering no last name, no backstory. The mystery only fueled the fear and respect in the eyes of the men who shook my hand.

But as the night wore on, a strange, creeping sensation crawled up the back of my neck. I felt eyes on me. Not the curious glares of high-society wives, but a focused, predatory stare.

"I need to use the restroom," I whispered to Dante.

"Take two guards," he insisted, signaling his men.

I walked down the plush, quiet corridor toward the powder room, flanked by two massive enforcers. But as I pushed the door open, a woman in a velvet cloak stepped out of the shadows.

"Hello, Lena," she whispered.

My heart stopped. It was my mother.
