Chapter 15 - The Traitor Exposed

|

The cleanup was brutal, efficient, and entirely silent.

By dawn, Marco’s body, along with the bodies of the guards who had betrayed the family, were gone. The estate was scrubbed clean, the breached doors replaced, and a new, fiercely vetted security team was put in place.

I sat in Dante’s private study, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, watching the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Leo was asleep in a portable crib next to the desk, completely unbothered by the violence that had nearly ended his life.

Dante poured two glasses of scotch and handed one to me. His hands, usually so steady, were trembling slightly.

"He wanted the throne," Dante said, his voice hollow as he stared into his glass. "He used your mother’s history with the Falcones to frame her, hoping I would hand you over to them and start a war that would leave me dead."

"What happens now?" I asked softly, taking a sip of the burning liquid.

"Now, the syndicate knows I am ruthless," Dante replied, looking up at me. "But they also know I have a weakness. They know about you."

He walked around the desk, kneeling in front of my chair. He took my hands in his, his thumbs gently stroking my knuckles.

"I cannot hide you in the shadows anymore, Alina," Dante said, his gray eyes intense and unwavering. "If you remain a secret, you remain a target. I have to formalize your position in this family. I have to elevate you so high that no one in the city will ever dare look at you twice."

"What are you saying, Dante?" my heart began to pound a frantic rhythm.

"I am officially claiming you," Dante stated, the raw power of the mafia king returning to his voice. "Tonight, at the annual high-society syndicate gala. You will walk in on my arm, not as a nanny, but as my companion. As my equal. The entire underworld will know that you belong to me, and that touching you means absolute, guaranteed death."

I looked at the man who had burned down an empire to save my life. I didn't want to run anymore. I wanted to stand beside him.

"Okay," I whispered. "I'll do it."
