Chapter 11 - The Spark in the Dark

|

For a long time, the only sound in the bunker was the soft hum of the ventilation system and Leo’s quiet breathing.

Dante didn't pull away. He leaned into my embrace, his forehead resting against my shoulder. The sheer vulnerability of the moment stripped away every title, every threat, and every wall between us. He wasn't the boss of the Rosselli syndicate, and I wasn't the waitress from the South End. We were just two people desperately trying to protect a child.

"You saved his life," Dante murmured, finally lifting his head to look at me. His face was mere inches from mine, his dark eyes searching my soul. "If you hadn't checked that bottle... I would have nothing left."

"I would never let anything happen to him," I whispered back, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Dante’s gaze dropped to my lips. The air in the small bunker suddenly felt thick, heavy with an electric, undeniable tension that had been building since the moment he walked into the restaurant.

He reached up, his large, calloused hand gently cupping my jaw. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone, wiping away a tear I hadn't realized I shed.

"You are so much like her," Dante said softly, "and yet, you are entirely your own fire."

I held my breath as he leaned closer, the scent of his cologne intoxicating in the confined space. My eyes fluttered shut, surrendering to the overwhelming magnetic pull between us. His lips brushed mine—a hesitant, agonizingly gentle touch that sent a jolt of pure fire straight down my spine.

It wasn't a demanding kiss. It was a desperate, seeking promise.

But before the spark could ignite into an inferno, the heavy steel door of the bunker buzzed violently.

Dante snapped back, his combat instincts instantly overriding his emotions. He grabbed his pistol, leveling it at the entrance as he checked the security monitor.

"It's Marco," Dante said, his voice returning to its cold, lethal baseline. He hit the release button.

The door swung open, and Marco stepped inside, his clothes splattered with fresh blood.

"We found the rat," Marco announced grimly, avoiding my eyes. "It was the head chef. He confessed before he died. He wasn't working for the Falcones, Dante."

"Then who paid him?" Dante demanded.

"He said he was hired by a woman," Marco replied, looking directly at me. "A woman named Elena Valdez."
