For the next three weeks, Emily barely left the forty-second floor. The data Marcus had handed her was a labyrinth of routing numbers, international shell accounts, and perfectly fabricated loan approvals. Whoever was bleeding the regional banks was a genius at obfuscation. But Emily was a genius at deconstruction.

She sat in the dimly lit office late on a Thursday night, surrounded by empty coffee cups. Her dual monitors displayed thousands of lines of transaction metadata. The automated systems flagged nothing. But Emily wasn’t looking at the numbers; she was looking at the timing.

"You're still here," a voice interrupted.

Emily blinked, looking up to see Sarah, a junior analyst, standing in the doorway holding a fresh pot of coffee.

"I think I found a pattern," Emily said, her voice hoarse.

"The algorithms ran that data six times, Emily," Sarah sighed, walking in and pouring her a cup. "If there was a pattern, the mainframe would have caught it."

"The mainframe is looking for illegal transfers," Emily explained, pointing at the screen. "But these transfers are perfectly legal. They are automated dividend payouts to dummy corporations. The anomaly isn't the money. It's the micro-second delay in the routing protocol."

Sarah frowned, leaning over the desk to look at the highlighted code.

"Look here," Emily traced the screen with her pen. "Every time a transfer exceeds fifty thousand dollars, the routing server in Chicago pings a secondary server in the Caymans. It delays the transfer by exactly zero-point-two seconds. The algorithm reads it as standard network latency."

"But it's not latency," Sarah realized, her eyes widening.

"No," Emily smiled, a predatory gleam in her eye. "It's a digital skim. They are shaving fractions of a cent off millions of micro-transactions during that delay and funneling it into an unlisted ledger. It's a high-frequency trading ghost."
