Chapter 11

The server room at Apex Zenith was a massive, humming vault of blue lights and cooling fans. Emily stood in the center of the room, directing the FBI cyber division on which physical drives to pull. The evidence of the skimming operation was overwhelming, but as Emily dug deeper into the decrypted metadata, a cold, unsettling feeling began to creep into her stomach.
"Director Vance," Emily called out, pointing to a specific sequence of routing numbers on her laptop screen. "I need you to look at this."
Marcus walked over, his expression serious. "What did you find?"
"The skim wasn't just hoarding cash in the Caymans," Emily explained, tracing the data lines with her finger. "It was heavily reinvesting the stolen capital back into the domestic real estate market. Specifically, commercial developments in downtown Chicago."
Marcus frowned. "They were laundering the money through skyscrapers?"
"Yes," Emily nodded, her voice tightening. "But look at the primary holding company receiving the laundered funds."
Marcus leaned in, reading the name aloud. "Bennett Enterprise Holdings."
Emily stared at the screen, the blue light reflecting in her eyes. It was her father’s company. Arthur Bennett was a prominent real estate mogul, a man who had built his fortune on ruthless intimidation and shadowy partnerships.
"Emily," Marcus said softly, instantly recognizing the name. "Is this..."
"It's my father's firm," Emily confirmed, her voice devoid of emotion, though her heart was pounding furiously. "He is the primary beneficiary of the Apex Zenith skimming operation."
"I have to pull you off the case," Marcus stated immediately, his tone shifting into protective management mode. "This is a massive conflict of interest. The FBI will tear your credentials apart if you investigate your own family."
"No," Emily said, turning to look Marcus directly in the eye. "My father is a corrupt, manipulative tyrant who spent his life telling me I was worthless. I am not stepping down. I know his corporate architecture better than anyone in this building. Let me bring him down."
Marcus looked at her, seeing the fierce, unyielding fire in her eyes. He nodded slowly.

"You have forty-eight hours to build the financial map," Marcus agreed. "If you miss a single connection, I pull you off."
"I won't miss," Emily promised.
