Chapter 16 - Lockdown

|

The estate was a fortress bracing for a siege. When the SUV roared into the underground garage, armed men were already barricading doors and rolling out heavy weaponry.

Sebastian was waiting in the foyer. He wasn't in his wheelchair. He was sitting in his titanium standing frame, strapped in upright, holding a customized assault rifle. He looked like an absolute warlord.

When he saw Clare walk through the door, unharmed but pale as a ghost, he unclipped the straps of the frame and practically threw himself into his wheelchair, rolling toward her at breakneck speed.

He grabbed her arms, pulling her down into his chest, burying his face in her neck.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his hands frantically checking her for blood.

“I’m fine,” Clare sobbed, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. “Gabriel saved me.”

Sebastian looked up at Gabriel, nodding once—a silent vow of eternal gratitude. Then he looked at Clare, his blue eyes filled with a terrifying, possessive fire.

“I pushed you away because I knew this would happen,” he whispered fiercely, pressing his forehead against hers. “The closer you get to me, the bigger the target on your back becomes. I wanted to keep you safe.”

“I’m not leaving you,” Clare said, gripping his shirt. “And I’m not leaving Oliver.”

“I know,” Sebastian said, his voice hardening into steel. “Which means there is only one way this ends. Romano dies tonight. And I am going to be the one who looks him in the eye when it happens.”

He released her, turning his wheelchair toward the war room. The Mafia Boss had returned, but this time, he wasn't fighting for territory or money. He was fighting for his family.
