Chapter 15 - The Target

|
Two days later, Clare needed to pick up a specialized medication for Oliver that couldn't be delivered to the estate. Gabriel insisted on driving her.
The ride into the city was tense. Clare hadn't spoken to Sebastian since their fight in the gym, though he had continued his therapy exercises alone, watched by the security cameras.
As they pulled up to the pharmacy, Gabriel parked the SUV at the curb, keeping the engine running. “Be quick. I don't like being exposed out here.”
Clare hurried inside, grabbed the prescription, and walked back out into the dreary Chicago rain. As she reached for the SUV door handle, a black van screeched around the corner, jumping the curb.
The side door slid open, revealing three men in ski masks holding automatic weapons.
“Get down!” Gabriel roared. He threw his body over Clare, tackling her to the wet pavement just as the first spray of bullets shattered the pharmacy windows.
Gabriel drew his weapon from the ground, firing back with lethal accuracy. One of the masked men dropped out of the van. The van’s driver panicked, slamming on the gas and speeding away down the avenue.
Gabriel hauled Clare to her feet, shoving her into the bulletproof SUV. He checked his shoulder—a bullet had grazed his jacket, but he was unharmed.
Clare was shaking violently, clutching Oliver’s medicine to her chest.
Gabriel hit the gas, weaving through traffic like a madman. He picked up his phone, hitting a speed dial.

“Boss,” Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Romano made a move. They targeted the girl.”
Clare heard Sebastian’s voice through the Bluetooth speakers, vibrating with a rage so dark it made her blood run cold. “Lock down the estate. No one gets in or out.”
