Chapter 8: The Boardroom Silence

At exactly noon on Thursday, the executive boardroom of Sterling Enterprises was a portrait of absolute despair.

Reginald Sterling, the man who had mocked Isabella’s simple dress at the gala, was sweating through his bespoke Italian suit. His lawyers sat beside him, looking pale and defeated. They had spent forty-eight hours trying to find a legal loophole, a way out of the trap that had been sprung around them.

There was none.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Isabella did not walk in. Elias did.

He walked with the silent, predatory grace of a man entirely in control. He carried a single manila folder, which he placed gently in the center of the massive glass table.

"Mr. Sterling," Elias said, his voice a smooth, icy baritone.

"Where is she?" Reginald snapped, his voice trembling despite his attempt at bravado. "If Isabella Calderon wants to gloat, she should have the decency to look me in the eye."

"Madam Calderon is currently attending her son’s parent-teacher conference," Elias replied smoothly, not blinking. "She has far more important things to do than watch you panic."

Reginald’s face flushed a deep, humiliated crimson.

Elias tapped the folder.

"Inside this folder is the transfer of your corporate debt. Madam Calderon has purchased it in its entirety," Elias explained. "She has instructed me to inform you that she will not be calling in the loans. She will not be bankrupting your family. You will keep your house. You will keep your cars."

Reginald stared at the man in the black suit, utterly bewildered. "Why? After what we did to her family... why would she let us survive?"

Elias leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the table.

"Because, Mr. Sterling, you are no longer a threat," Elias said softly. "You are merely an employee. Sign the paperwork. And never forget who owns the ground you walk on."
