Chapter 6 - The Secret Safe Deposit Box

|
The following morning, Naomi and I stood inside the underground vault of First National Bank in downtown Atlanta.
A senior bank manager turned two heavy brass keys simultaneously, sliding out a long metal safe deposit box that had remained untouched since my father's death four years ago.
"This box was placed under a conditional hold, Miss Whitmore," the manager explained, bowing his head respectfully. "Per your father's instructions, it could only be opened after your marriage to Evan Whitmore was legally dissolved."
"Thank you," I said softly.
Once the manager left us alone in the private viewing room, Naomi pulled off the heavy lid. Inside sat a thick leather-bound journal, a stack of vintage stock certificates, and a small silver key.
I opened the journal. The yellowed pages were filled with my father's precise handwriting.
I flipped through the dates until I reached July 14, 1994.
“Victor has discovered the discrepancy,” the entry read. “He knows I shifted the European freight licenses under my personal name. Barbara assured me she destroyed the original partnership agreements, but I know she kept copies to hold over my head. If Victor ever returns from London, Whitmore Freight will be torn apart. I am binding the voting shares to Clara's trust. Only an heir untainted by our crime can survive what is coming.”
I gasped, dropping the journal onto the table.
"My father... he embezzled the original shipping licenses?" I whispered, my voice breaking.
Naomi picked up the journal, reading the lines quickly with practiced legal scrutiny. "It wasn't just embezzlement, Clara. Look at the next page."
She turned the leaf. Tucked inside was a certified birth certificate from 1988.
The name on the child's record was Evan Whitmore.
Placename of birth: London, England.
Biological Father: Victor Sterling.
Biological Mother: Barbara Whitmore.

The blood drained from my face entirely. "Evan... Evan isn't just my ex-husband."
"Evan is Victor Sterling's biological son," Naomi said, her voice shaking with disbelief. "Barbara didn't just help your father steal the company, Clara. She raised Victor's son while keeping his true identity a secret from everyone—including Evan himself."
