Chapter 18 - The Hospital Visit

|
That afternoon, I visited the federal wing of Grady Memorial Hospital.
Two armed sheriffs stood guard outside Room 412. I nodded to them, and they unlocked the heavy door, allowing me to step inside.
Evan sat in his hospital bed, wearing a yellow inmate gown, staring blankly out the window at the Atlanta skyline. His left arm was wrapped in a thick white sling, and his cheeks were hollow and pale.
He turned his head slowly as I walked in.
"Clara..." he whispered, his voice hoarse. "You didn't have to come."
"I brought your personal items from the penthouse," I said, setting a small cardboard box on the bedside table. "Your father's watch, your old family photo albums... things the federal auditors didn't seize."
Evan looked down at the box, tears filling his dark eyes. "I don't deserve your kindness, Clara. I was a terrible husband. I treated you like an object."
"You did," I agreed frankly, pulling up a chair beside his bed. "You let your ego convince you that my silence was weakness."
"I paid for it," Evan sobbed, burying his face in his good hand. "My mother is going to prison. My biological father tried to kill me. I have no money, no career, no family left."
"You have your life, Evan," I said softly. "Which is more than Victor was going to give you in that server room."
Evan looked up at me, his eyes filled with genuine, painful remorse. "Why did you save me, Clara? After everything I did to you?"
"Because I didn't save you for who you were, Evan," I answered, standing up and smoothing my jacket. "I saved you so I could finally walk away with a clean conscience."
I turned toward the door, taking a slow step forward.
"Clara?" Evan called out softly behind me.
I paused, looking back over my shoulder.
"I'm sorry," Evan whispered, tears streaming down his face. "For everything."

I looked at him for a long moment, felt the final heavy chain of eleven years snap inside my chest, and gave him a faint, peaceful nod.
"Goodbye, Evan."
