Chapter 15 - The Bloodline Betrayal

The air inside the red-lit server room was suffocating.
Victor's tactical guards kept their weapons trained on us, while the two SEC agents slowly lowered their handguns, realizing they were completely outgunned.
"Sign the documents, Clara," Victor said, pulling a silver pen from his pocket and tossing it at my feet. "Or watch everyone in this room pay for your father's sins."
I looked at the silver pen lying on the cold concrete. Then I looked at Evan, who was sitting on the floor, weeping in complete terror.
Suddenly, Evan stood up.
He didn't run. He didn't hide. He stepped directly between Victor's armed guards and me.
"No," Evan said, his voice raspy and shaking, but remarkably clear.
Victor raised an eyebrow in cold amusement. "Excuse me?"
"I said no," Evan repeated, wiping the tears from his bloodshot eyes. "I spent eleven years being a terrible husband. I let my mother manipulate me. I let Kelsey trick me. I let my vanity ruin my life... but I am NOT going to let you kill Clara."
"Evan, move!" I warned, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"Shut up, Clara," Evan said softly, without turning around. "For eleven years, you protected me from my own stupidity. Just let me do one good thing before I go to prison."
Victor let out a cold, disgusted sigh. "You really are a pathetic boy, Evan. You have none of my blood in your spirit."
"I don't WANT your blood!" Evan roared, charging directly at Victor!
BANG!
A gunshot echoed deafeningly through the concrete basement!
Evan collapsed onto his knees, clutching his shoulder as blood stained his navy suit coat.

"EVAN!" Kelsey screamed, rushing forward to grab him as he fell onto his side!
In that exact split second of chaos, David pressed the master enter key on his wireless laptop terminal from inside the booth!
