Chapter 18 - The Clear Horizon|

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Rhode Island, washing away the cold ghosts of winter. The gardens of the Moretti estate were blooming with white lilies, lavender, and fresh green grass.

The scandal that had rocked the state’s legal and political foundations had finally settled.

Judge Victor Vance had been convicted on all charges and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Julianna Vance remained institutionalized in Vermont, her family’s fortune completely confiscated by federal asset forfeiture.

The Moretti name was no longer spoken in whispers of fear on Federal Hill. Under Vincent's quiet, decisive leadership, the family's assets had been entirely transitioned into legitimate commercial shipping, green energy, and municipal real estate.

At two o'clock on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the grand front doors of the mansion were wide open, allowing the warm ocean breeze to flow through the corridors.

In the sunlit dining room, the long mahogany table was set for three.

Maria Carter walked in carrying a large tray of fresh pasta, garlic bread, and sweet tea. She wore a stylish linen dress, her posture proud and relaxed, her face radiating peace.

Beside her walked seven-year-old Emma, wearing a bright blue summer dress. In her arm she carried her old button-eyed cloth doll, while her other hand carefully held the small porcelain cat Vincent had given her.

Vincent walked into the room, wearing a comfortable open-collar shirt, a warm smile touching his lips.

"Sit down, everyone," Vincent said, pulling out a chair for Emma.

Emma sat down happily, setting her two toys on the table beside her plate.

Vincent sat at the head of the table, reaching for a piece of fresh, warm bread from the central basket.
