Chapter 17 - Justice in the Dark|

Victor Vance cowered back into the leather armchair, holding his hands up in desperate supplication.
"Please, Vincent! I have money! Forty million in Swiss accounts! It's yours! Just let me take the flight to Zurich! You'll never see me again!"
Vincent looked down at the weeping judge. A month ago, he would have pulled the trigger without a second thought. That was the law of Federal Hill. Blood for blood.
But as he looked at the pathetic old man shivering in his silk jacket, he remembered the warm kitchen of his estate. He remembered Maria stirring soup, and little Emma coloring her yellow cat with her new porcelain toy.
If he pulled the trigger tonight, he would become the monster Marco and Victor had tried to make him. He would condemn Emma to growing up in the shadow of a killer.
Vincent slowly lowered the gun.
Victor let out a long, shuddering sob of relief. "Thank you... thank you, Vincent..."
"Don't thank me, Victor," Vincent said softly, turning his back on the judge.
Paul stepped forward, holding a satellite telephone already connected to an open line.
"On the line is Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Paul announced loudly to the room. "He has been listening to this entire conversation through the wiretap installed on your desk twenty minutes ago."
Victor’s eyes widened in sheer, absolute horror. He looked toward the small brass lamp on his desk, where a tiny red LED light was blinking steadily.
"Judge Victor Vance," Agent Miller's voice boomed over the speaker. "Federal agents are surrounding your estate right now. Stay where you are. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, and high treason."

Siren wails cut through the roaring storm outside, red and blue lights flashing wildly through the shattered glass doors.
Vincent walked out into the rain, leaving the judge to his fate.
