Chapter 20 - The Unseen Shadow

|

Back at the estate, the afternoon passed in quiet, domestic bliss. Elena finished baking with Mia, leaving the kitchen smelling of vanilla and warm sugar.

In the late afternoon, Marco was conducting a routine sweep of the lower levels. The old boiler room where Silvio had kept Elena had been sealed off, destined to be converted into a storage vault.

As Marco supervised the contractors breaking down the old concrete walls, a hollow, metallic sound echoed in the damp air.

"Stop," Marco ordered, holding up a hand.

He walked over to the exposed brickwork behind the old boiler. Tucked into a narrow, dark crevice, hidden from plain sight, was a small, rusted metal lockbox. It had clearly been placed there long before Silvio had taken Elena hostage. It had been gathering dust for years.

Marco pulled it out, blowing the thick layer of dirt off the lid. He used a crowbar to snap the rusted lock.

Inside the box lay a stack of yellowing, handwritten letters and a small, leather-bound ledger.

Marco opened the ledger. The pages were filled with financial transactions, shipping coordinates, and names. But it wasn't the numbers that made the blood freeze in Marco’s veins. It was the crest embossed on the inside cover of the book.

It was the crest of the New York Commission.

Marco flipped to the letters. They were correspondences addressed to Silvio, dated over five years ago. Long before the coup. Long before Elena had ever arrived at the mansion.

He read the first letter, his eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing horror.

Silvio, the first phase is complete. The factory accident was executed flawlessly. Elena’s husband has been eliminated. The widow is desperate. Ensure she finds her way to your cousin’s estate. She is the perfect Trojan Horse. We play the long game.

The paper trembled in Marco’s hands.

Elena hadn't arrived at the mansion by chance. The factory accident that killed her husband wasn't an accident. The entire tragedy of her life had been orchestrated by the New York Commission years ago, planting her in Aleandro’s house as a sleeper agent, or a pawn meant to distract the most powerful boss in the city.

Silvio wasn't just a traitor. He was a puppet who had been playing his own cousin for half a decade.

Marco’s secure radio buzzed on his hip. It was the perimeter guard at the front gate.

"Marco," the guard's voice crackled, laced with sudden, sharp panic. "We have a problem. Three black unmarked SUVs just pulled up to the gates. The license plates are from New York."

Marco stared at the letter, the terrifying realization washing over him. The New York Commission hadn't attacked the docks to take over the territory. They had attacked to force Aleandro to fully embrace the Trojan Horse. They wanted him in love. They wanted him vulnerable.

And now, they were here to collect.

The heavy iron gates of the estate groaned as a massive explosion shattered the afternoon peace, blowing them completely off their hinges.

The real war had just begun.
