Chapter 14 - The Shift in the House

|

The execution of a high-ranking capo shifted the entire dynamic of the Moretti estate. The sprawling, silent mansion transformed into a heavily fortified war bunker overnight. Extra guards patrolled the perimeter, heavy steel shutters were brought down over the ground-floor windows, and the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife.

But inside the east guest wing, a different kind of shift was occurring.

Elena was recovering rapidly under the care of the private physician. The bruises were fading, but the psychological terror lingered. For three days, she refused to leave the opulent bedroom, keeping Mia close by her side, terrified that the nightmare would return.

On the fourth afternoon, there was a soft knock on her door.

"Come in," Elena called out nervously, pulling her sweater tighter around her shoulders.

The door opened, and Aleandro stepped inside. He wore a dark suit, looking impeccably tailored but deeply exhausted. He didn't look like the ruthless boss who had executed his cousin; he looked like a man seeking refuge.

"How are you feeling, Elena?" Aleandro asked quietly, staying near the door to give her space.

"I am much better, Don Aleandro," Elena replied, standing up respectfully. "Thank you for the doctor. And for the clothes. But... I should get back to work. Rosa will need help with the laundry, and I have taken up this beautiful room for too long."

Aleandro frowned, a flash of genuine pain crossing his sharp features.

"You are not going back to work," Aleandro stated firmly. "And you are not leaving this room unless it is to move into a better one."

Elena stared at him, confused. "Sir, I am a maid. I have to work to pay for our keep."

Aleandro walked slowly across the room, stopping a few feet away from her. He looked down into her wide, anxious eyes, entirely abandoning the terrifying persona he wore for the rest of the world.

"You are no longer a maid in this house, Elena," Aleandro said softly, his voice a low, comforting rumble. "You are under my personal protection. You saved this family from a traitor. You hid the evidence when Silvio took you, and you refused to break. You are a guest in my home for as long as you wish to stay."

Before Elena could argue, Mia popped her head up from the other side of the bed. She had been playing with her stuffed rabbit.

"Uncle Aleandro!" Mia chirped, completely ignoring the fact that he was the most feared man in the city. She scrambled off the bed, ran across the room, and hugged his leg tightly.

Elena gasped in horror, stepping forward to pull her child away. "Mia, no, you must not bother the Don!"

May you like

But Aleandro didn't push the child away. He looked down at the little girl hugging his tailored trousers, and slowly, miraculously, a gentle smile broke across his scarred face. He reached down and gently patted her curly head.

"She is not bothering me," Aleandro murmured, looking up at Elena with a warmth that made her breath catch in her throat. "In fact, she is the only good thing that has happened in this house in a very long time."
