Chapter 15 - Zero Balances

Across town, Grant Carlisle was sitting in the corner booth of a dingy diner, staring at a lukewarm cup of coffee. Vanessa sat across from him, shivering in her white designer dress, her mascara running in dark tracks down her cheeks. The trash bags full of her belongings were stuffed into the back of Grant's Porsche.
"You told me she was a quiet, submissive housewife!" Vanessa hissed, slamming her hands on the sticky table. "You said she made a modest government salary and that you owned the company! She threw me out like a stray dog, Grant!"
"I didn't know!" Grant fired back, running a trembling hand through his hair. "I thought the trust was just a formality to avoid taxes! I've been running Frost-Carlisle for five years! She never questioned a single decision I made!"
"Well, she’s questioning it now," Vanessa snapped. "Call your lawyers. Liquidate the joint accounts. We need to buy a house, or at least get a suite at the Four Seasons. I am not sitting in this disgusting diner for another minute."
Grant pulled out his phone and dialed his private wealth manager at Chase Bank. He tried to project an air of authority, though his voice cracked slightly. "Yes, Thomas. It's Grant Carlisle. I need to authorize a massive wire transfer from my primary checking account to..."
Grant stopped. He listened to the voice on the other end of the line, his face draining of all remaining color.
"What do you mean, frozen?" Grant shouted, drawing the attention of the waitress. "That is my money! ... Reverted to the primary trust? She can't do that without my signature! ... Thomas! Thomas!"
Grant slowly lowered the phone, staring blankly at the wall.
"What is it?" Vanessa demanded.
"The prenuptial agreement," Grant whispered, the horrific realization finally crashing down upon him. "I signed it the day before the wedding. I thought it was standard. But it had a morality clause. And an embezzlement clause. Evelyn's lawyers triggered them this morning. She legally recalled every single dime I've made over the last five years. The accounts are frozen. The credit cards are dead."

Vanessa stared at him, her eyes widening in absolute horror. "What are you saying, Grant?"
"I'm saying I have exactly four hundred dollars in cash in my wallet," Grant choked out. "And that is all we have in the world."
