Chapter 12 - The Mansion's True Deed

By the time I left the corporate building, my phone was blowing up with furious, panicked text messages from Grant. I ignored every single one of them. Dismantling his professional life was only the first step. He and Vanessa had terrorized my child in a house that I owned. It was time to clean my house.

I drove my sleek black SUV up the winding, private road toward the sprawling estate in Cherry Creek. According to the updates from the private investigator I had hired at 2:00 AM, Vanessa was currently hosting a "redecorating" brunch for her high-society friends. She was parading around my home, drinking my champagne, entirely unaware that her world was about to violently collapse.

I did not go alone. I pulled up to the wrought-iron gates alongside two marked police cruisers and a moving truck.

The front door of the mansion was wide open. Laughter and the clinking of crystal glasses drifted out onto the manicured lawn. I walked through the grand entryway, flanked by two uniformed sheriff's deputies.

Vanessa was standing in the center of my sunken living room, wearing a stunning white designer dress. She was gesturing grandly toward the original Picasso hanging above the fireplace. "Yes, Grant and I are thinking of tearing down this entire wall," she bragged to a group of three wealthy women. "Evelyn’s taste was just so terribly outdated. It feels so much better now that the dead weight is gone."

"I agree," I said loudly. "It's time to take out the trash."

Vanessa spun around, her champagne flute trembling in her manicured hand. When she saw the deputies behind me, her smug arrogance faltered, but she desperately tried to maintain her composure in front of her friends.

"Evelyn," Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms. "Are you really throwing a tantrum with the police? Grant is going to be furious when he hears about this."

"Grant is currently crying in his car outside a corporate building he is no longer allowed to enter," I replied, pulling a piece of paper from my jacket. "This is an emergency eviction notice and a trespassing warrant, signed by a judge three hours ago. This property belongs entirely to the Evelyn Frost Irrevocable Trust. Grant’s name is not on the deed. Your name is not on the deed. You have exactly ten minutes to vacate my property."

Vanessa’s friends gasped, immediately setting their drinks down and shuffling toward the door, desperate to avoid the scandal.

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, her face turning purple. "I live here!"

"Not anymore," I smiled coldly.
