Chapter 7: The Desperate Plunge

The icy water rushed past Arthur's ears as he forced his eyes open, ignoring the sharp sting of the chlorine. He kicked downward with explosive power, his heavy, soaked suit jacket and leather shoes dragging against him, fighting to weigh him down.

Through the hazy, blue distortion of the water, he saw her. Elena was resting near the very bottom, curled tightly into a protective ball, her hands still fiercely gripping her swollen stomach. She was completely, terrifyingly still.

Arthur’s heart screamed in his chest, a silent roar of terror and determination. He reached her, wrapping his strong arms securely around her waist. He planted his leather shoes firmly against the ceramic bottom of the pool, bent his knees, and pushed upward with absolutely every ounce of physical strength he possessed.

His own lungs burned aggressively for air, but the only thing that mattered in the universe was breaking the surface.

They burst through the water in a violent splash. Arthur gasped greedily for air, immediately pulling Elena’s head back to clear her airway.

"Elena! Elena, stay with me! Please!"

He kicked frantically toward the edge of the pool, fighting the crushing weight of their soaked clothing, hauling her heavy, unconscious body up over the edge and onto the sun-drenched deck.
