Chapter 20 - The Silver Rattle

|

Three months later, the Romano penthouse was completely transformed.

The heavy tactical gear and tension had been replaced by baby monitors and soft, plush rugs. The glass fortress felt like a genuine home.

Chloe stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the snow fall over Chicago. She wore a comfortable cashmere sweater, bouncing a happily cooing baby boy on her hip.

Arthur walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder as he smiled at his son.

“He has your eyes,” Arthur murmured, kissing Chloe’s neck.

“And your stubbornness,” Chloe laughed, leaning back into his embrace.

The war was a distant memory. Arthur had solidified his rule, moving the syndicate's operations further into legitimate, untouchable businesses. They had built an impenetrable wall of peace around their family.

A soft chime echoed from the private elevator.

Leo stepped out, holding a small, elegantly wrapped package.

“Mail call, Boss,” Leo said, setting the box on the coffee table. “It cleared the security scanners. No explosives, no chemical traces. But there’s no return address.”

Arthur frowned, the relaxed father instantly shifting back into a cautious protector. He handed the baby to Chloe and walked over to the table.

He carefully untied the silver ribbon and opened the small box.

Inside, resting on black velvet, was an antique silver baby rattle. It was beautifully crafted, but engraved on the handle was a highly detailed, unmistakable crest: a falcon gripping a bleeding rose.

Tucked beneath the rattle was a handwritten note on thick parchment.

Arthur picked up the note, his blood running cold.

Malcolm was a fool, but I am not. Congratulations on the beautiful baby boy, Arthur. Enjoy the peace while it lasts. I will see you soon.

Arthur stared at the note, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line. The Croft empire had fallen, but the heiress had survived, disappearing into the shadows.

Chloe walked over, looking at the silver rattle and the grim expression on her husband's face.

“Arthur?” she whispered, fear creeping back into her voice.

Arthur didn't panic. He crumpled the note in his fist, a dark, terrifying smile touching his lips. He looked at the woman he loved and the son he would burn the world for.

“Let her come,” Arthur promised softly, his eyes burning with absolute, deadly confidence. “We’ll be waiting.”
