Chapter 14 - The Ambush

|

The lower tunnel was a damp, echoing stretch of concrete beneath the city, usually reserved for utility maintenance.

At exactly midnight, a single black SUV drove slowly into the darkness of the tunnel.

Malcolm Croft stood at the far end, surrounded by thirty heavily armed mercenaries. When the SUV came to a halt in the center of the tunnel, Malcolm raised his hand, signaling his men to open fire.

The barrage of bullets was deafening, tearing the SUV to shreds, shattering glass and ripping through metal.

Malcolm smiled triumphantly, believing he had just executed the King of Chicago and his pregnant queen.

“Cease fire!” Malcolm shouted, the smoke clearing slowly in the dim light.

He walked cautiously toward the riddled vehicle, his weapon drawn. He wrenched the bullet-riddled door open, expecting to find the bodies of his enemies.

The SUV was completely empty. The steering wheel was locked by a specialized rig.

Malcolm’s blood ran cold.

“It’s a trap!” Malcolm screamed, spinning around.

The heavy steel doors at both ends of the tunnel slammed shut simultaneously, sealing the Croft forces inside a concrete coffin.

Floodlights blazed to life from the upper catwalks, blinding the mercenaries.

Arthur Romano stood on the catwalk, looking down at his enemy like a vengeful god. He held a customized assault rifle, flanked by fifty of his most elite, ruthless enforcers.

“You tried to poison me at the altar, Malcolm,” Arthur’s voice boomed through a megaphone, echoing terrifyingly off the concrete walls. “You tried to murder my wife and my unborn child. Tonight, the Croft family ends.”

Arthur didn't wait for a response. He didn't offer a monologue. He raised his hand and dropped it.

The Romano forces unleashed an apocalyptic wave of suppressive fire. The tunnel turned into a slaughterhouse, the sound of gunfire deafening and absolute. Arthur fought with a cold, terrifying fury, ensuring that every mercenary who had threatened his family met a brutal end.
