Chapter 6 - THE QUEEN'S PALACE

|

By seven thirty, the dining room was completely packed.

Vanessa had spared no expense with my money.

The long mahogany table was decorated with eucalyptus garlands, towering silver candlesticks, and cloth napkins folded into intricate swans.

Twelve people sat around the table.

There were Vanessa’s closest socialite friends, dressed in silk dresses and tailored blazers. Two couples from Brandon’s corporate law firm. A wealthy neighbor from down the block.

Vanessa’s mother, Linda, sat near the head of the table, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, drinking champagne from a flute that belonged to my father’s mother.

And sitting right near the center was a polished woman named Rachel, who kept adjusting her glasses and admiring the crown molding on the ceiling. I knew who Rachel was the moment I saw her leather briefcase resting against her chair leg—she was a senior partner at the top real estate agency in the city.

Vanessa floated around the room like a monarch inspecting her court, holding a glass of Pinot Noir.

“Oh, this kitchen was a total nightmare when we bought the place,” Vanessa was telling Rachel, gesturing proudly toward the open-concept marble island. “We had the entire main floor gutted last spring. Imported Italian marble, custom cabinetry. It was exhausting, but Brandon insist on giving me the best.”

Rachel smiled politely, taking a sip of wine. “You’ve done an absolutely breathtaking job with the property, Vanessa. The architectural bones here are incredible.”

“We’re actually considering another renovation next spring,” Vanessa added smoothly, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “Expanding the master suite upstairs.”

I stood near the shadow of the hallway archway, leaning quietly against the wall with my arms crossed over my chest.

Mom was standing two feet behind me, carrying a heavy silver tray loaded with smoked salmon crostini. Her hands were shaking so hard the garnishes were sliding across the silver platter.

Then Rachel asked a question that made my blood run instantly cold.

“Are you and Brandon thinking about selling eventually? The market in this zip code has skyrocketed over the past eighteen months.”

Vanessa smiled, her expression calculating and cold.

“Maybe,” Vanessa said in a hushed, conspiratorial tone. “Brandon and I have discussed downsizing once his mother moves into assisted living.”
