Chapter 11 - THE DEED OF TRUTH

|

The name echoed through the silent dining room like a thunderclap.

Elaine Carter. Sole owner.

Vanessa’s face went completely blank, as if her brain had temporarily shut down and couldn't process the sounds coming out of Rachel's mouth.

Brandon closed his eyes tightly, dropping his head into his hands.

Linda gasped loudly, clutching her pearls. “What? That… that’s impossible!”

I sat back comfortably in my chair, looking at the stunned faces around the table.

“I bought this house six years ago,” I explained calmly to the guests. “I bought it after our father passed away because my mother had spent forty years taking care of everyone else, sacrificing her youth, her health, and her sanity. I wanted her to have one place in this world where she would never worry about rent, a mortgage, or losing the roof over her head.”

I shifted my gaze directly onto Vanessa’s pale, trembling face.

“This house has never belonged to you, Vanessa. Not one single brick of it.”

Vanessa let out a strange, desperate laugh, her eyes darting frantically around the room, searching for an escape hatch.

“Brandon lives here!” she yelled, her voice trembling with rising panic.

“Yes,” I agreed smoothly. “He does.”

“He’s your brother!”

“Yes.”

“So obviously he has legal rights to the property!” she shot back, looking at the law partners from his firm for validation.

Both of Brandon’s lawyer colleagues immediately looked down at their plates, refusing to meet her eyes. They knew the law. Squatter's rights didn't apply to a family member living rent-free under a guest arrangement.

Rachel quietly tucked her hands into her lap, looking away. She clearly wanted to disappear through the floor.

I replied to Vanessa in a tone so calm it was almost chilling.

“Living somewhere because the owner is kind enough to allow it does not make you the owner, Vanessa. It makes you a guest.”

Vanessa spun around and slapped her hand against Brandon’s shoulder.

“Say something!” she screamed at him. “Brandon, tell her!”

Brandon didn't move. He kept his face buried in his hands.

“Brandon!” she shrieked hysterically.

Finally, my brother slowly lowered his hands. His eyes were red, filled with tears and deep, dark shame.

He didn't look at his wife. He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell her, Elaine?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

I stared at him, bewildered.

“Tell her what, Brandon?”

“That you still owned it,” he mumbled.
