Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL

|

I flipped to the second page of the folder, my chest tightening with every second that passed.

Beneath the neat lists of utility payments, there was a secondary log written in darker, rushed handwriting. Dates, dollar amounts, and initials.

B.C. — $500

B.C. — $1,200

V.C. — $800

V.C. — $2,500

My brother Brandon and his wife, Vanessa.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment, trying to process the numbers screaming off the page.

For the past three years, my mother hadn't just been receiving the money I wired every month from overseas. She had been coerced into handing half of it over.

There was a folded piece of stationery tucked behind the log. It was a letter from Vanessa to my mother, written in looping, arrogant script:

"Margaret, since Brandon is now the man of the family, it is only proper that he oversees the household accounts. Please sign the bank authorization form attached so we can manage the overhead efficiently."

My mother had signed it. Her signature at the bottom looked shaky, like a child writing under threat of punishment.

I turned the page. What followed wasn't a record of household bills. It was a paper trail of absolute, unadulterated vanity.

Withdrawals.

Hundreds of dollars at a time. Then thousands.

A line item for custom velvet curtains: $3,400.

Designer cocktail dresses from high-end boutiques: $1,200.

Five-star steakhouse dinners in the city: $650.

A weekend retreat at a luxury spa resort: $2,100.

And at the very bottom of the page, dated just two weeks ago, was a bank transfer receipt labeled: Deposit for Kitchen Renovation — Paid from Carter Master Account.

The "Carter Master Account" was the joint account I had set up for my mother’s living expenses. My sweat. My missed holidays. My sleepless nights working double shifts in emergency rooms.

Vanessa hadn't just moved into my mother’s house. She was draining my life’s work to construct an illusion of wealth for herself.

And then I saw the card at the very bottom of the stack.
