Chapter 4 - The Arrangement

|

The truth of Nora Bennett’s miraculous ascension from a penniless divorcee to the wife of the most powerful syndicate boss in New York was a secret held by exactly three people.

It had begun three weeks after her divorce. Nora had been working double shifts at a high-end private preschool to afford her tiny studio apartment in Queens. One afternoon, a five-year-old boy named Leo had refused to speak, refused to eat, and hid under a reading table while his heavily armed security detail hovered nervously in the hallway.

Nora hadn't treated him like a mafia prince. She had crawled under the table with a picture book, handed him half of her own peanut butter sandwich, and sat in comfortable silence until he finally leaned his small head against her shoulder and fell asleep.

When Luca Castellano arrived to pick up his son, he found the woman who had managed to calm the boy who hadn't slept through the night since his mother died two years prior.

Luca had hired her as a live-in nanny on the spot, offering a salary that made Nora’s head spin.

For two weeks, she lived in the Castellano estate, remaining practically invisible, entirely focused on Leo. But Luca noticed her. He noticed that she didn't flinch when his men walked through the halls with holstered weapons. He noticed that she made Leo laugh. He noticed that she looked at him not as a monster, but as a father who was drowning in grief.

Then came the pressure from the Italian Commission. They demanded Luca remarry to solidify a failing alliance, threatening to betroth him to a ruthless, violent heiress from a rival family.

Luca had walked into the kitchen at two in the morning, poured two glasses of whiskey, and slid a contract across the marble island to Nora.

“Marry me,” Luca had said, his voice entirely devoid of romance, yet thick with desperation. “It is a business arrangement. You provide Leo with the mother he desperately needs, and you provide me with a shield against the Commission. In exchange, you will have access to my wealth, my protection, and absolute freedom within these walls.”

Nora had read the contract carefully. She had spent seven years shrinking herself for a man who hated her. Now, a man who feared nothing was asking her to stand tall beside him.

“I will not share your bed,” Nora had stated firmly, setting the paper down.

“I will not ask you to,” Luca had replied, his dark eyes fixed on her face.

She signed the paper. She became a Castellano. But as the weeks bled into a month, the lines of their fake marriage began to blur in a terrifying, intoxicating way. And when she discovered that her abusive ex-husband, Gregory, was laundering money through Meridian Capital—the very firm visiting the estate today—she knew she needed an access card to prove it.
