Chapter 19 - A Real Family

|
The winter weeks melted away, leaving the Castellano estate bathed in the bright, hopeful light of spring.
With the threat of Meridian Capital destroyed and the Russian syndicate satisfied with their revenge on Gregory, a profound, unshakable peace settled over the mansion. The heavily armed guards remained, but they smiled more often. The tension in the halls had vanished.
Nora was no longer just playing a role. She had fully embraced her position as the matriarch of the family.
It was a Sunday afternoon. Nora was sitting on a picnic blanket in the sprawling, manicured gardens, watching Leo chase a golden retriever puppy Luca had purchased for him the day before. The boy’s laughter echoed through the trees, a joyful, unburdened sound.
Luca walked out of the house, shedding his suit jacket, wearing a simple white button-down shirt. He looked relaxed, the heavy burdens of his empire momentarily forgotten. He sat down on the blanket beside Nora, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close.
“He is happy,” Luca murmured, watching his son tackle the puppy into the grass.
“We are all happy,” Nora smiled, leaning her head against his broad shoulder.
Luca shifted, turning to face her fully. The playful, relaxed demeanor vanished, replaced by an intense, vulnerable sincerity. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Nora’s breath hitched. She already wore a massive diamond ring—the ring he had given her for their fake marriage contract.
Luca opened the box. Inside was a simple, elegant, flawless sapphire band.
“I put a ring on your finger to satisfy a business arrangement,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes searching hers. “I gave you a diamond to prove to the world that you were protected. But I want to give you this sapphire to prove to you that you are loved.”
Tears welled in Nora’s eyes. She remembered the broken sapphire bracelet in the foyer, the moment her life had violently shifted. He had taken the symbol of her lowest moment and transformed it into a promise.
“I don't want a contract anymore, Nora,” Luca whispered, taking her hand. “I want a real marriage. I want a real family. I love you, fiercely and absolutely. Will you stay with me? For real this time?”

“Yes,” Nora choked out, a radiant, joyful smile breaking across her face. “Yes, Luca. Forever.”
He slid the sapphire band onto her finger, right next to the diamond, and kissed her deeply, sealing the promise in the warm spring sun.
