Chapter 1 - The Shattered Sapphire

|

The sapphire bracelet broke before Nora Bennett hit the floor.

One second, Vanessa Thorne had Nora’s wrist twisted between her impeccably manicured fingers. The next, blue stones exploded across the white marble foyer like pieces of frozen sky, bouncing against the polished stone with sharp, chaotic clicks.

“You don’t belong in this house,” Vanessa hissed, her voice dripping with absolute venom.

Nora landed hard on one knee, then caught herself with her palm. A sharp, burning pain shot through her hand as the jagged edge of a broken sapphire sliced into her skin. A thin line of red appeared beneath it, stark against the pristine white marble.

Around them, twelve employees from Meridian Capital stood completely frozen beneath the twenty-foot ceiling of the Castellano estate. No one quite understood how an exclusive corporate retreat had suddenly devolved into a physical assault in the main foyer.

Vanessa stared down at Nora’s curvy, soft body as though she had finally proven a deeply held theory.

“I knew you were pretending,” Vanessa said, her lips curling into a cruel sneer. “You are just a pathetic nanny playing dress-up in jewelry that doesn’t belong to her.”

Nora did not cry. She slowly lifted her head, her dark eyes locking onto the tall, blonde executive.

“Let go of my wrist.”

Instead of backing away, Vanessa’s eyes narrowed, and she tightened her grip, her acrylic nails digging into Nora’s skin.

Then a small, desperate voice shattered the heavy silence of the room.

“Mommy!”

Five-year-old Leo came racing across the marble, his little dress shoes slipping slightly before he caught his balance.

And walking deliberately behind him was Luca Castellano.

He wore a bespoke black suit with no tie, silver threaded elegantly through his thick dark hair. His expression was so terrifyingly still that the entire grand room seemed to physically shrink around him. The temperature dropped. The corporate employees stopped breathing.

His dark, calculating eyes dropped first to Nora’s bleeding hand. Then they moved to the broken bracelet scattered on the floor. Finally, they locked onto Vanessa.

“Take your hand off my wife.”

Vanessa released Nora so quickly she stumbled backward, her designer heels clicking frantically as she tried to put distance between herself and the most feared mafia boss on the East Coast.

Nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.

Except Nora.

She looked past Vanessa’s trembling shoes and saw a white access card lying on the floor beside the woman's dropped designer purse. And suddenly, the burning pain in her palm didn’t matter at all. Because that small white card was the exact reason Nora had intentionally let Vanessa inside the gates today.
