Chapter 8 - THE HUNT BEGINS

“What do you mean liquidating?” I asked, my fingers tightening around the burner phone.

“The original merger contract you translated four years ago,” Marcus explained quickly. “Dominic buried a clause in the secondary addendum. It stated that if you were declared mentally incapacitated before the birth of an heir, your twenty-five percent equity in Callahan Maritime automatically transferred to his personal holding company without board review.”

The final piece of Dominic’s grotesque puzzle clicked into place.

He didn't just want sole custody of our son to control the Callahan medical legacy. He needed me legally erased so he could seize the thirty million dollars in equity my father had left me—equity that was currently preventing Dominic from taking absolute control of the company’s board.

“He has the lawyers, the press, and the doctors,” I said, looking out the slit in the curtains at the rainy street. “If I go to the media, he’ll claim I’m having a psychotic episode.”

“Then we don't go to the media,” Marcus said firmly. “We go after the foundation of his empire. The translated contracts, Clare. Do you still have your original working drafts?”

“I have the encrypted drive from four years ago,” I replied. “The one with my father’s digital signature.”

“If those drafts prove that Dominic altered the addendum after your father signed it, it isn't just a custody dispute anymore,” Marcus declared. “It’s corporate fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. It carries a federal sentence.”

Before I could answer, the soft glow of headlights illuminated the dark street outside the brownstone window.

A sleek black SUV with tinted windows slowed to a crawl right in front of Aunt Rosa’s building.

My heart stopped.

A lone man stepped out into the rain, holding an umbrella over a sharp black suit.

It was Viktor—Dominic’s chief head of security.
